Guide to Exploring Excelsior: Parks, Trails & Hidden Gems

Hi, I’m Mia Erickson. Whether you’re new to Excelsior or just want fresh ideas for your weekends, here are great spots & activities that make our little lake town feel so special.

Parks & Waterfront Escape

The Commons & Port of Excelsior

This 13-acre waterfront park is the heart of town. With two beaches, tennis courts, playgrounds, baseball fields, picnic areas, a bathhouse, docks, and trails—it’s perfect for a sun-soaked afternoon, watching boats go by, or letting kids run free.

Excelsior Parkland & Studer Pond

Want something calmer? The Parkland offers quiet paths, wetlands, mature trees and garden plots. It’s ideal for a gentle walk, bird-watching, or just sitting by Studer Pond with a book.

Museums, History & Local Flavor

Minnesota Streetcar Museum

Ride an old-restored streetcar between bayside spots downtown. It’s a fun slice of history—with charming views and a chance to slow down and enjoy the scenery.

Lake Minnetonka Historical Society & Small Boutiques

Want to delve into local heritage? The Historical Society holds a rich collection of artifacts. Then walk along Water Street to browse boutiques, antique shops, cozy cafés—you’ll find treats and stories in every storefront.

Trails, Trails & More Trails

The Lake Minnetonka Regional Trail passes through town and connects you to neighboring parks. Whether on bike or on foot, it’s a scenic route without needing a car. Pair it with lakeside views or downtown stops to make a full, satisfying outing.

Weekend Activity Ideas

  • Start with brunch downtown, then head to the Commons beach for a swim or sunbathing.
  • Pack a picnic or bring games, settle in at Port-side benches or a shady tree spot.
  • Catch the streetcar or take a lakeside cruise departing from Excelsior docks.
  • Plan around events: look out for Apple Days in autumn, Art on the Lake, concerts in the Commons.
  • For quieter weekends, swap busy patios for benches overlooking the lake, local bookstore browsing, and trail walks.

Wherever your mood takes you—active & outdoorsy, history-loving, or simply relaxed—Excelsior offers all sides of small town life by the lake. Let me know if you want a custom plan: family-friendly, rainy weekend, or dog-friendly options.
