Excelsior’s Environmental Initiatives: A Community Commitment to Sustainability

Excelsior, Minnesota, is actively implementing environmental initiatives to promote sustainability and protect its natural resources. These efforts encompass organic park management, water conservation, and shoreline restoration.

Transition to Organic Park Management

In August 2025, Excelsior partnered with Beyond Pesticides and Osborne Organics to transition city parks to organic land management practices. This initiative aims to eliminate the use of petrochemical pesticides and fertilizers, fostering healthier environments for residents and wildlife. Councilmember Jennifer Caron highlighted the significance of this step in minimizing runoff into Lake Minnetonka.

Water Conservation Efforts

The city emphasizes water conservation as a cost-effective and environmentally sound strategy to reduce water demand. By using less water, residents can alleviate pressure on sewage treatment facilities and conserve energy used for water heating. Excelsior provides resources and tips to help residents incorporate water-saving practices into their daily routines.

Shoreline Restoration Projects

Excelsior Commons Park, a historic public space on Lake Minnetonka’s southern shore, is undergoing restoration to address erosion and enhance visitor experience. The project includes removing invasive species, planting native vegetation, and stabilizing the shoreline with a combination of vegetation and riprap. These efforts aim to protect the lake’s health and provide educational opportunities for park visitors.

Through these initiatives, Excelsior demonstrates a strong commitment to environmental stewardship, ensuring the preservation and enhancement of its natural resources for future generations.
