Excelsior’s Environmental Initiatives: Preserving Our Natural Heritage

Excelsior, Minnesota, is taking proactive steps to safeguard its natural environment and promote sustainability. The city has launched several initiatives aimed at preserving its unique ecosystems and ensuring a healthy future for its residents.

Transition to Organic Land Management

In August 2025, Excelsior partnered with Beyond Pesticides and Osborne Organics to transition city parklands to organic land management practices. This program focuses on eliminating the use of petrochemical pesticides and fertilizers, thereby protecting public health and the environment. Councilmember Jennifer Caron highlighted the significance of this initiative, stating, “Excelsior has embarked on an exciting first step in organically managing our public parks and minimizing runoff into the lake.”

Water Conservation Efforts

The city emphasizes the importance of water conservation as a cost-effective and environmentally sound strategy to reduce water demand. By encouraging residents to adopt water-saving practices, Excelsior aims to stretch its water supplies further and protect its resources. The city provides helpful tips and resources for conserving water both indoors and outdoors.

Surface Water Management

To address the challenges posed by stormwater runoff, Excelsior has implemented a comprehensive surface water management plan. This plan focuses on reducing pollutants entering lakes and streams through the storm drain system. The city also participates in the Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) program, which requires the development of a Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) to minimize pollutants in the stormwater system.

Watershed Protection

Excelsior is located within the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District (MCWD), which is dedicated to protecting and improving the quality of lakes and streams in the area. The MCWD offers matching grant programs for property improvements that enhance water and natural resources within the watershed. Residents are encouraged to contact the MCWD for more information on these programs.

Private Property Inflow and Infiltration Grant Program

To address the issue of clear water entering the wastewater system, Excelsior participates in the Private Property Inflow and Infiltration Grant Program. This program provides grants to private property owners to help with repairs that prevent stormwater and groundwater from entering the wastewater treatment system, thereby reducing the risk of sewer backups and overflows.

Through these initiatives, Excelsior demonstrates its commitment to environmental stewardship and the preservation of its natural heritage for future generations.
